We know from past experience that burn areas are especially susceptible to damage from flooding, and mud and debris flows that result from winter rains. The effects of fire damage and the increased potential for additional damage from these flows can last several storm seasons (October-April), until vegetation in the affected areas is fully re-established.

These temporary and long term solutions can be completed by individual homeowners. And though intended to assist in reducing potential damage, there is no guarantee that they will prevent damage or injury. As always, work with your neighbors to deflect (not block) flows around your homes and do not undertake preventative measures that would expose neighboring properties to risk. Also, it is very important that you have planned evacuation routes.
