Homeowners’ Guide for Post-Fire Flood, Debris, and Erosion Control
We know from past experience that burn areas are especially susceptible to damage from flooding, and mud and debris flows that result from winter rains. The effects of fire damage and the increased potential for additional damage from these flows can last several storm seasons (October-April), until vegetation in the affected areas is fully re-established.
The links below contains information, guidelines and illustrations for protecting your property from flooding and mud and debris flows in both the short and long term. Sandbags, deflectors, sealing methods and window and door protections are discussed, as are methods for strengthening soil that is weakened by erosion, and, native plant choices recommended for slope stabilization after a fire event.
These temporary and long term solutions can be completed by individual homeowners. And though intended to assist in reducing potential damage, there is no guarantee that they will prevent damage or injury. As always, work with your neighbors to deflect (not block) flows around your homes and do not undertake preventative measures that would expose neighboring properties to risk. Also, it is very important that you have planned evacuation routes.
Please review the information contained here and begin taking steps now to avoid additional destruction during the upcoming winter storm season.
